Majors' defense attorneys accuse ex-girlfriend of desire for revenge
Domestic violence cases are often difficult to try in court due to unclear evidence. The trial involving US actor Jonathan Majors is similar. His ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari accuses him of violence. The defense lawyers speak of revenge as a motive and accuse her of assault.
In a trial against US actor Jonathan Majors for alleged assault, both sides made their opening statements on December 4. While the prosecution claims that Majors allegedly wanted to injure his girlfriend at the time, Grace Jabbari, the defense spoke of "false allegations".
Marvel star Majors, known from "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" and "Loki" among others, appeared in court in Manhattan at around 09:30 (local time), according to a report in the industry magazine "Variety". The actor, who pleaded not guilty, was charged with three counts of assault and harassment. Another charge had been dropped.
On March 25, 2023, Jabbari took Majors' cell phone from his hand and saw that he had received a message from another woman, the indictment alleges. "I wish I was kissing you right now," it read. Majors grabbed his girlfriend at the time and tried to remove her fingers from the phone. In doing so, he allegedly deliberately caused her considerable pain, bruising and swelling.
Majors' lawyer countered that Jabbari had, on the contrary, attacked Majors. She had gone to a club with three men after the incident while he was sitting in a hotel and had ended their relationship of over two years by text message. He found her unconscious in the morning in the apartment they shared and called the police. Jabbari later told the police that she had been injured by Majors. She was taken to hospital so that her wounds could be treated.
Public prosecutor's office is not investigating Jabbari
Both had already been briefly arrested in recent months - Majors after the incident in March, Jabbari in October. Majors had accused her of domestic violence. However, the public prosecutor's office had declined to prosecute the allegations against the actor's ex-girlfriend.
"This case is about the end of a relationship, not a crime, at least not one that Mr. Majors committed," the defence had now explained. "Out of revenge", Jabbari allegedly made "false accusations" to ruin Majors.
The trial is expected to last around two weeks. According to US media reports, Majors faces a prison sentence of up to one year if he is found guilty.
