The upcoming UEFA European Championship and Ukraine Conference have prompted the Berlin Police to prepare for one of their biggest operations in recent times. This is according to Police President Barbara Slowik, who shared that the current situation is more tense than it has been in her entire six-year tenure.

The challenges facing the police range from potential terrorist attacks to violent fans and demonstrations by pro-Palestine or climate activist groups. During the final match in Berlin on July 14th, the police expect to have between 3,000 and 4,000 officers on standby. Additionally, the attendance of foreign state guests is also expected. Stephan Katte, the head of the long-term operation, mentioned that for matches with German participation or held in Berlin, up to 2,000 police officers will be required.

Katte further added that the police must be vigilant about the international situation in crisis and war zones like Gaza and Ukraine, as they could potentially attract individuals looking to draw attention to their cause. "We cannot predict what might happen," he said. Katte also noted that the European Championship serves as a platform for those with concerns to get their message across to the public. Daily, the police engage in negotiations and information exchanges with other federal states to ensure the best possible security during the championship.
