Lady Gaga clarifies her choice not to dispute rumors suggesting she identifies as a male.
During an episode of Netflix's "What's Next? The Future with Bill Gates," Lady Gaga addressed the whispers about her gender identity that circulated while she was climbing the fame ladder.
"I've been all over the globe," Gaga told Gates. "I've toured and promoted my music, and every interview I've sat in, there's this weird internet stuff that popped up – 'There's rumors you're a man. What's your take?'"
Back in 2011, during an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on "60 Minutes," Gaga had a laid-back response to such queries.
"There was even that rumor you had a boy part," Cooper stated.
"Maybe I do," Gaga retorted. "So what? It wouldn't be so bad, would it?"
Gates continued, "Most artists probably would have put out a statement squashing those rumors. But you find humor in it."
Gaga humorously responded, "Why on earth would I waste time writing a press release about whether or not I have a private part? My fans don't care, and neither do I."
Gaga further explained her reasoning for not addressing those rumors during her conversation with Gates.
"The reason why I didn't address it is because I didn't feel like a victim with that lie and I thought: What about a kid who's being accused of something like this? They might think a famous figure like me would feel embarrassed. I've been in situations where refuting a rumor wasn't beneficial for others."
The legendary performer is now accustomed to the frequent "misinformation" surrounding her.
"Lies about me have been printed endlessly," Gaga said. "I'm a performer. I think it's kind of funny."
Despite the constant misinformation about her, Lady Gaga continues to find entertainment in it. Her unique approach to handling rumors about her gender identity has been an entertaining spectacle for her fans.
