Pivotal moments marked the departure of RTL news pair Peter Kloeppel (65) and Ulrike von der Groeben (67), following 32 years of sharing the evening news "RTL Aktuell." Yet, the broadcast, commencing at 6:45 PM as usual, merely served as the opening act.

RTL, the private Cologne-based broadcast station, subsequently vacated a substantial portion of its principal programming time - approximately half an hour - to commemorate their departure. RTL's media expert and journalist, Frauke Ludowig, likely questioned the burning question on everyone's lips: was there a romantic connection between the duo off-screen? Both denied, stating that their bond was solely centered on their shared passion for their work.

The initial news broadcast drew the attention of 2.74 million viewers on linear television, equating to a market share of 18.9% from 6:45 PM. The ensuing special broadcast "RTL Aktuell Spezial: Farewell" garnered an average viewership of 2.56 million spectators (a 16.0% market share) commencing at 7:05 PM.

Günther Jauch delivered a warm "du"

A wave of congratulations and praise flowed in from well-wishers, colleagues, politicians, celebrities, and distinguished figures. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) was among the laudatory messages. Günther Jauch, another well-known figure in the RTL family with his show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", offered the duo the informal "du."

The duo was also accorded a Guinness World Records certificate. They were recognized as the longest-serving news duo after their retirement. Family members and colleagues honored them with prolonged applause, melodious piano music, and a serenade.

Kloeppel and von der Groeben, fixture in German television since the 90s, even during the era when smoking was permissible in workplaces, have left an indelible mark. Von der Groeben's archive footage showcases the smoking era.

Kloeppel emerged as the epitome of a news anchor. RTL, as a young private broadcaster, was pioneering new formats. Casual presentation, accessible topics, and novel broadcast elements. Kloeppel, an award-winning journalist, has also moderated Chancellor candidate debates.

An avalanche of emotions at the farewell

The last broadcast was undeniably loaded with emotions. Kloeppel posed the question to von der Groeben: was it a good or a challenging day. Von der Groeben summarized: "I'd say they're about even. We're dealing with an avalanche of emotions for both of us today." Kloeppel reassured, "But we'll get through it. I know we will."

The news duo bid their farewell to the audience, directing their final sentiments towards them. Von der Groeben expressed, "It has been an honor, a responsibility, and always a pleasure to be here for you and inform you." Kloeppel added, "Without you, this wouldn't be possible. So we bid our farewells with gratitude towards you."

Their retirement had been public knowledge for months. The future holders of "RTL Aktuell" are Roberta Bieling and Christopher Wittich. Anna Fleischhauer (36) and Andreas von Thien (57) will manage sports. RTL opted to fill these positions internally rather than recruiting external candidates.

After their departure from RTL Aktuell, Ulrike of the Groeben might reflect on the shared memories she and Peter Kloeppel built over their 32-year journey as news anchors. The broadcasting industry might honor Ulrike of the Groeben with awards or recognitions, celebrating her significant contributions to German television.
