Statement on the Parthenon frieze? - King Charles' tie triggers speculation
The British King Charles is known for his commitment to organic farming. In this respect, his participation in the climate conference in Dubai comes as no surprise. However, his tie is causing discussion for a completely different reason.
In the midst of a fierce dispute between London and Athens over the famous Parthenon frieze, the British King Charles III has caused a stir with his choice of tie. The monarch appeared at the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai on Friday wearing a light blue tie with a print reminiscent of the Greek flag. This caused heated discussions on the internet.
There was speculation, particularly from the Greek side, that Charles wanted to send out a signal against the British head of government Rishi Sunak, who was also in Dubai, by choosing the tie. The Prime Minister had canceled a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis planned for this week in London at short notice. The latter had previously announced that he wanted to campaign for the return of the Parthenon frieze during the meeting with Sunak.
Greece has been seeking the return of 56 parts of the frieze, which are in the British Museum in London, for decades. The components of the 75-metre-long Parthenon frieze were cut from the outside of the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis in Athens at the beginning of the 19th century on behalf of the then British ambassador Lord Elgin and taken to Great Britain in agreement with the Ottoman Empire at the time. Athens considers the marble slabs to have been stolen. In London's opinion, they were acquired legally.
Charles is of Greek descent through his father, the late Prince Philip, who was born on the Greek island of Corfu. A Buckingham Palace source said on Friday that the King was already wearing the same tie before the row escalated. British media reported that in addition to the blue and white tie with the same white cross pattern as the Greek flag, Charles also wore a blue and white handkerchief sticking out of his jacket pocket.
