Kate Winslet recalls the "Titanic" moment.
In the blockbuster movie "Titanic," countless people around the world watched with bated breath as Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio locked lips at the ship's bow. But Kate recently opened up in an interview with "Vanity Fair," revealing that the making of that iconic scene was far from a dreamy love affair.
Reminiscing about the filming of the legendary "I'm flying" scene, Kate Winslet shared that things were anything but romantic. The actress joked, "Aww, he's such a romantic, isn't he? No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio. But it wasn't anything like that at all."
During the scene where Rose kisses Jack, Winslet recounted the chaotic nature of the shoot. "We had to kiss each other a lot, and I had a lot of pale makeup on. There were makeup checks between takes, and by the end, I looked like I'd just polished off a whole caramel lollipop. Meanwhile, Leo looked like a chunk of his face was missing because his makeup was delayed."
The 48-year-old further described how disastrous the entire process was. Not only did they face issues with the location—the makeup team found it unacceptable—but also with the lighting and her regular bump into the railing made shooting each take a challenge.
Not only was Cameras' specific lighting preference an issue, but Winslet and DiCaprio also had to repeat takes multiple times due to their constant laughter. This was all a part of the filming process, and their commitment to their roles was palpable. As Winslet summarized, "Oh God, it was such a mess."
The makeup issues weren't the only challenges that came up. The location of the scene wasn't part of the actual set but rather a real part of the ship. They had to climb a ladder to reach it. "The hair and makeup team couldn't find these places, so we had to hide the makeup tools in our clothes. And between takes, I had to redo our makeup."
Despite all the hurdles they faced during the filming, the success of "Titanic" in 1997 was undeniable. The movie scooped up eleven Oscars, making it one of the most celebrated films in cinematic history. For Winslet and DiCaprio, who were just starting their Hollywood journeys at the time, taking on these roles kicked off an incredible career that's unparalleled to this day.
