Karlovy Vary Film Festival begins with prize for Viggo Mortensen

In the Czech Republic, the 58th International Film Festival of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) commenced. At the opening gala on a Friday evening, Hollywood star and director Viggo Mortensen accepted the award from Festival President Jiri Bartoska. "It is a great honor for me that my work as a storyteller in cinema is recognized", thanked the 65-year-old.

World-renowned, Mortensen is known for his role as Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" film adaptations. Recently, he directed the Western "The Dead Don't Hurt", which was shown as the opening film in Karlsbad. The film is set to come to German cinemas in August. The role of Vivienne in the film is played by the German-Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps. "It was difficult to make this film - it's always difficult to make a film - but I could rely on a wonderful group of actors", Mortensen said.

Prize also for Daniel Brühl

The German-Spanish actor Daniel Brühl and the British actor Clive Owen will also be awarded the prize of the Festival President during the course of the festival, which lasts until July 6. Overall, more than 130 feature and documentary films are on the program this year. The film festival in Karlsbad, founded in 1946, is one of the oldest in the world. Last year, a total of over 123,000 admission tickets for film screenings were sold. Karlsbad is located about 70 kilometers south of Chemnitz and about 55 kilometers east of the Bavarian city of Selb.
