Trial after death on movie set - Jury selection in the criminal trial against Alec Baldwin

Kick-off in Alec Baldwin's Trial: The selection of twelve jurors in the Santa Fe, New Mexico court marks the start of the proceedings against the actor for involuntary manslaughter. The 66-year-old star, known for films and series like "The Hunt for Red October," "Blue Jasmine," or "30 Rock," appeared in court with his wife Hilaria Baldwin (40). The actor did not respond to questions from reporters, according to Court TV's report.

Both the prosecution and defense must first select a dozen jurors and a few alternates from the candidate pool. The proceedings can then begin with opening statements. The judge has set aside nearly two weeks for the trial. Cameras are allowed in the courtroom - the trial will be livestreamed. Witnesses expected to testify include film industry professionals, investigators, and firearms experts. In the end, twelve jurors must render a verdict. If found guilty, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.

The fatal incident at the Western set

The indictment stems from a shooting incident on the set of the Western "Rust." On October 21, 2021, the lead actor Baldwin discharged a revolver during rehearsals. Instead of blank cartridges, live ammunition was discharged. The bullet pierced cinematographer Halyna Hutchins (42) and then struck director Joel Souza in the shoulder. Hutchins, mother of a then nine-year-old son, died shortly thereafter; Souza sustained lighter injuries.

Baldwin had claimed in interviews that he had not pulled the trigger's safety. At the January hearing, the actor and producer pleaded not guilty. However, a firearms expert's report suggests that the safety must have been pulled.

Baldwin's defense attorneys' pre-trial maneuvers

In the pre-trial proceedings, the defense successfully argued that only Baldwin's role as an actor should be considered in the trial. The prosecution, on the other hand, wanted to bring up Baldwin's additional role as a producer of the Western - arguing that he had ignored safety protocols, pressured film crew members on set, and endangered them.

The prosecution, in turn, received the judge's approval to show the jurors videos of Baldwin handling weapons on set. They intend to use these videos to demonstrate that the actor acted recklessly during filming.

Previous guilty verdict against the armorer

In a separate trial, the armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for weapon safety on the "Rust" set, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. She had loaded the gun with live ammunition. In April, she was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison.
