US director Greta Gerwig - Jury chairwoman at the Cannes Film Festival

2023 was the most successful year of her career to date for "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig (40) - and it looks set to continue in 2024, as Gerwig will be Jury President at the Cannes Film Festival. This is according to a statement on the official website of the film festival. This makes the 40-year-old the first US-American female director in history to chair the Cannes jury.

Greta Gerwig is "overwhelmed"

Greta Ger wig will accompany the 77th edition of the festival, which will take place from May 14 to 25 in the coastal city in the south of France. The Sacramento-born American would embody the renewal of world cinema and represent an era that breaks down barriers and mixes genres, the festival explained its decision.

"For me as a filmmaker, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can be," Gerwig herself is quoted as saying in the statement. "I am overwhelmed, thrilled and humbled to take over the presidency of the Cannes Film Festival jury," it continues. The Cannes Film Festival announced the news a few days after the Berlinale appointed actress Lupita Nyong'o (40) as jury president for 2024.

Gerwig celebrated her breakthrough as a director in 2017 with her multiple Oscar-nominated debut film "Lady Bird". After "Barbie", she already has her next huge project lined up: the reboot of the "Chronicles of Narnia" films.
