Hollywood star - Julia Roberts occasionally switches off her phone

In her new film "Leave The World Behind", Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts is cut off from the outside world and has to cope without cell phone reception and the Internet. Even in real life, the 56-year-old occasionally switches off all communication devices. "I think you just have to do that if you can," Roberts told the German Press Agency in London. "Some people just can't, because of their work or something."

As a mother of three, it is also important to her at home that the smartphone is not constantly present. "We've always had pretty good rules in our house, for example: no phones on the table. And sometimes we put all cell phones away because it's important for all of us to remember that we have a certain responsibility for them." Nevertheless, she is a "cool mom", joked the "Pretty Woman" star. "We're just going to hold that because my kids aren't here saying, "What are you talking about?"

Surprised by the state of emergency in the country

In the end-time thriller "Leave The World Behind", which is now available to watch on the streaming service Netflix, Roberts plays a mother who is surprised by a national emergency during a weekend trip to the countryside with her family. With no phone reception or internet, the family from New York City doesn't know what's been happening around the country as eerie incidents begin to pile up in the vacation area.

Given the technical limitations of communication, records and DVDs are used to pass the time in the Long Island vacation home. For Julia Roberts, this is anything but unusual, even in real life. "Listen, I'm 56 years old," she said with a laugh. "I have vinyl, I have photo albums, I have all this stuff."
