Julia Roberts flirts with a sequel to the classic

There are quite a few classic films with Julia Roberts. The romantic comedies from the late 80s onwards are particularly memorable - including "Pretty Woman", "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Notting Hill". She could imagine a sequel to one of these films, explains Roberts.

Julia Roberts answered a fan question about her past film successes on the talk show "Watch What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen. As a clip on X shows, when asked which of her films she would like to make a sequel to, the 56-year-old explained that she could imagine a sequel to "My Best Friend's Wedding". She also provided the reason for this.

So many people appeared in the 1997 romantic comedy that a sequel could show "what they do and how Kimmy and Michael's marriage has evolved," Roberts explained. Directed by P.J. Hogan, Roberts plays Jules, a restaurant critic who realizes she's in love with her longtime best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) after he reveals to her that he's engaged to his new love Kimmy (Cameron Diaz).

Desperate to win his heart, Jules tries to stop the wedding and, out of desperation, fakes an engagement to her gay best friend George (Rupert Everett). In the end, however, Michael celebrates a happy ending with Kimmy. Roberts obviously liked the fan's question: "That's a really good question," she said. Another fan then wanted to know from Roberts: "Who do you think Michael should have married in 'My Best Friend's Wedding'?" The actress promptly replied on the talk show: "Jules, of course. But he married Kimmy."

The film was released in 1997 and grossed around 300 million US dollars (around 278 million euros). In 2019, the four main actors Roberts, Mulroney, Diaz and Everett celebrated a reunion and posed for the cover of the US magazine "Entertainment Weekly". Mulroney is said to have been moved to tears by the reunion, according to Entertainment Weekly: "I think about these people every day. Because every day for the past 22 years, people come up to me and talk to me about this movie."
