Joker's sequel at Film Festival Venice

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, as well as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, are among the Hollywood stars expected at this year's Venice Film Festival. An German documentary runs out of competition.

The continuation of the award-winning work "Joker" with Joaquin Phoenix has its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Besides Phoenix, who won the Oscar for best actor in 2020 for the first part, Lady Gaga is featured in "Joker: Folie a Deux" in a leading role. Todd Phillips directed once again. The first part of "Joker" won the main prize at Venice in 2019.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie present films

The film festival takes place from August 28 to September 7. The ex-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are expected with separate films in Venice. Jolie plays the lead role in "Maria", a drama by Pablo Larraín about opera singer Maria Callas. The film is in competition.

Outside of competition, "Wolfs" is shown: The new film by Jon Watts brings Brad Pitt and George Clooney together on screen again.

Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law in competition films

21 films will compete for the main prize of the festival, the Golden Lion. Among them is the new film by Pedro Almodóvar, "The Room Next Door" with Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

Additionally, "Bones and All" by Luca Guadagnino is part of the competition. It stars Daniel Craig and Timothée Chalamet. Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas are part of "Babygirl" by the director Halina Reijn.

Adrien Brody and Joe Alwyn are in "The Brutalist" by Brady Corbet, the new drama by him. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult play leading roles in "The Order": a thriller by Justin Kurzel.

Documentary about Leni Riefenstahl out of competition

There is also a German production outside of competition: the documentary "Riefenstahl" by Andres Veiel. The director and screenwriter will soon release a book based on research in Riefenstahl's estate.

Riefenstahl (1902-2003) was equally famous and infamous for the controversial propaganda film about the Nazi Party rally in Nuremberg in 1934 ("Triumph of the Will").

The festival is opened with "Beetlejuice 2" - the sequel to the legendary horror comedy from 1988. The work by Tim Burton, with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder reprising their roles, opens the festival out of competition.

After last year's festival saw significantly fewer Hollywood stars attend due to the Hollywood strike, it can be assumed that all involved celebrities will come to Italy this year.
