Johnny Cash's son writes letter to his father

John Carter Cash pays tribute to his father Johnny Cash in an essay. The country legend died 20 years ago. "I've seen you every day since you passed away," he writes, telling him how much has changed in the world.

Twenty years after his father's death, his son John Carter Cash wrote a kind of letter to the deceased. In it, the 53-year-old tells how the world has changed since the country legend's death. "Dad, I've seen you every day since you passed away," Carter Cash begins his text, which was published by "People". "When I wonder how you feel about something, all I have to do is 'log on'." Today's technological possibilities are a blessing for him. He can find various interviews with his father on the internet and search for all kinds of information. This means he is always present for him.

John Carter Cash is also a musician.

He also describes how Nashville has changed as the center of country music, with its skyscrapers and countless tourists. A museum was built there for the musician in 2011 and despite the external changes, the soul of the city is still alive. "Thirty minutes north of the city center, I often walk across the land that once belonged to you. I can feel your presence there. When I record music in the Cash Cabin Studio, your spirit continues to inspire the musicians, the technicians and my creativity," says the songwriter and music producer.

"But I miss you"

He feels particularly connected to his father through spiritual books or by studying his texts, poems or other writings. "I read the words and remember them as your own teachings. Now they remind me to strive to be kind to all, as you and mom have always been," Carter Cash writes. "I am still your student and thank you. But I miss you."

Johnny Cash was a devoted family man and a great artist. Music and song lyrics remained an important part of his life: "I'm still reading, still listening and still learning. And I appreciate you more every day," Carter ends the emotional text. John Carter Cash is the only son of the country icon and his second wife June Carter Cash, who died six months before him in May 2003.

  1. Despite the advancements in technology, allowing John Carter Cash to access numerous interviews and information about his father online, he misses the physical presence of Johnny Cash, expressing, "I've seen you every day since you passed away."
  2. The world of entertainment and country music has greatly evolved since Johnny Cash's death, with Nashville transformed by skyscrapers and tourists. Yet, the essence of the city hasn't changed, as John Carter Cash can still feel his father's presence in the land he once owned and in the music they continue to create together at the Cash Cabin Studio.
