Apartment wanted - Moving stories - Johanna, 20: "I sleep on the floor in a company conference room because I can't find an apartment"

When Jette Johanna Sørensen wakes up in the morning, she sees conference tables and chairs. Her mattress is on the floor and her clothes are hanging on a rack, like those at flea markets. She stows most of her things in her suitcase.

The 20-year-old has been living like this for two months now. During the day, she is a trainee in marketing communications. At night, she sleeps on the floor of a company's conference room on an old, lint-stained carpet.

She can't find an apartment in Hanover. But she has already tried a lot. For her dream apartment, with wooden ceiling beams and a balcony, she created a PowerPoint presentation about herself and why she would be the right tenant. Without success.

The company where she is now staying belongs to a friend of her family. The focus is on IT security. Almost only men work there. After her first night in the conference room, she came to the kitchenette in the morning, she says, and wanted to make herself breakfast there. But the kitchenette was full of men who didn't yet know about her new lodger. They stared at Johanna in amazement as she went to the fridge.

In the meantime, everyone has gotten used to each other. Jette Johanna Sørensen usually works until 5 p.m., after which she can go to the conference room as if it were her home. But there have been several occasions when conferences have been held there until 7 pm. Her personal belongings were put in a storeroom for this time.

At the weekends, she drives the two hours home to her father, her sister and her cat Milou. She wants to do laundry there, she doesn't want to wear the same clothes every week. She knows her way around her home town, has a room and a bed there. In Hanover, she sometimes only finds her way around using GoogleMaps.

Her dream apartment should have two rooms. She doesn't want to have to invite guests into her bedroom. It shouldn't cost more than 550 euros. That's all she wants, and yet it just won't work out.

Despite the ongoing housing shortage in Hanover, Johanna's apartment search in the housing market has been unsuccessful. She's contemplated moving to a different city due to the challenge, but for now, she continues her search. During a recent conference, she had an idea to create a PowerPoint presentation showcasing her qualifications as a potential tenant, but it didn't lead to securing an apartment.
