Jill Biden wasn't at all taken with Joe at first
US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill have been married since 1977. At first, it didn't look like a long, happy relationship could develop, the First Lady has now revealed.
During a fundraiser for the US President in New York, Jill Biden let it slip that she was not exactly taken with his style when she met her husband in 1975. "It was the 70s, Vietnam, pearl necklaces and civil rights. My hair and that of most of the men I went out with back then was down to my waist. Do you remember what you wore back then? Clogs, bell bottoms, tie-dye pants," the 72-year-old is quoted as saying by the US portal "Page Six".
Joe Biden, however, chose a completely different outfit for the first meeting. Then "one day, out of the blue, I was invited on a date and that evening a handsome young senator turned up on my doorstep", says Jill Biden. The outfit was actually far too chic for her: "I took one look at his perfect suit and leather loafers and thought: 'Thank God, it's just a date!
It took five proposals
That evening, it probably wouldn't have occurred to her that she would have a longer future with Joe Biden, the president's wife made clear. Some time had passed before she agreed to marry him. "Well, a date eventually turned into a marriage proposal. And okay, if I'm completely honest, it was actually five proposals, because that wasn't part of my plan."
Her hesitation also had to do with Joe Biden's family situation, the First Lady continued, explaining: "As many of you know, years earlier, Joe's wife Neilia and his young daughter were killed in a car accident."
Joe Biden had already entered into his first marriage in the 1960s, which produced a total of three children. After the accidental deaths of his wife and daughter in 1972, he was left as a single father to two sons, Beau and Hunter.
"It had to be forever"
That's why it wasn't just her heart that was at stake, Jill Biden now explained. In light of the loss that her current husband and his sons had experienced, "I knew that if I said yes to Joe, it had to be forever," said the current wife of the US President. "At some point, I realized that my love for Joe and the boys outweighed any fears I had, and I said yes. And here we are 46 years later," she is finally quoted as saying by "Page Six".
Jill and Joe Biden married in the summer of 1977 in New York. Four years later, they also became parents once again with the birth of their daughter Ashley.
