An elegant white coat, a serious yet hopeful gaze into the distance: This is how US First Lady Jill Biden presents herself on the August issue of the high-end fashion magazine "Vogue." The 73-year-old is said to have the most influence on her husband Joe, the incumbent US President who is running for a second term in November. The advanced age of Joe Biden has been a topic for a long time, but after a disastrous TV debate performance against challenger Donald Trump, calls for his retirement have grown louder.

Jill Biden stands by her man nonetheless. "Vogue" quoted her as saying that she and her family "won't let these 90 minutes determine the next four years of his presidency. We'll keep fighting." Her husband Joe added, "He'll always do what's best for the country."

Joe Biden's performance at the first TV debate last Thursday sparked a debate in the US about whether he should step down for a younger candidate. However, the Democrat and the first row of his party have so far resisted the retirement calls – they are concerned with damage control.

Joe Biden under pressure – Jill Biden supports him

Biden hopes, like his predecessor Trump, for a victory in the presidential elections in November. So far, many signs point to a close race. Doubts about Biden's fitness due to his advanced age have been around for a while. The Democrats had hoped that the incumbent would show in the debate how fit he still is, but the opposite happened: Biden spoke quietly and indistinctly to a million-strong audience, mumbled at times, or completely lost his thread.

Jill Biden was also criticized after the debate for praising her husband's "wonderful job," despite the many suitors. Some Republicans even went so far as to accuse Jill of elder abuse, wrote the newspaper "New York Post." Others accused her of treating her husband like a little boy.

In the "Vogue" interview, Jill Biden explained that she encouraged her husband to be active in as many areas as possible. "I tell him what I see, what I hear – and he understands it," she said. "And that's where the magic happens."

At the same time, Jill Biden emphasized in the interview what her husband has achieved and done – and was surprised that US citizens do not recognize it. "If they knew – I mean, the bridge is built in their town and they don't know who built it. They don't know who gets the lead out of their water. They don't know who stops the pipeline that runs through the parkland," she said. This is why she tries "to be out there." "To say: 'We've achieved this, and this is how it affects your life.'"

It's not the first time Jill Biden has graced the cover of "Vogue." In June 2021, the First Lady was photographed smiling in an elegant dark floral dress on the balcony of the White House, with the Washington Monument in the background. Her predecessor Melania Trump did not receive this honor. Michelle Obama managed to appear on the cover several times, as did Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.
