Jason Derulo broke his neck doing a somersault

A loud crack and Jason Derulo fears for his life. In a podcast interview, the musician speaks about the shock moment ten years ago when he broke his neck during tour preparations.

It's been more than ten years since Jason Derulo narrowly escaped death in an accident. During tour preparations, the 34-year-old "Savage Love" singer broke his neck while training at the fitness studio. He spoke about this moment in the podcast "I Am Paris" during a conversation with Paris Hilton.

For him, it was "the biggest tour of my life" back then, Derulo recalls. His trainer had him practice backflips repeatedly in preparation for the stage shows, specifically 50 of them: "One of the worst ideas anyone has ever had." Derulo slipped and landed on his head. In doing so, he broke the second cervical vertebrae.

"When it happened, I heard a loud crack and all sorts of scenarios went through my head. I thought: 'Holy shit, is that it?' Paris Hilton was waiting for me outside the hall. I didn't want to alarm her, so I picked myself up, held my neck, and got in the car with her." They drove to the hospital together.

Derulo suffered a hangman's fracture

The ride felt like "hell on earth" for Derulo. He thought: "I'm dying in the passenger seat, but I don't want to admit it." In the hospital, the doctor then explained to him what a miracle it was. "The good news is, you have a hangman's fracture, which is the same fracture that occurs when someone is hanged. And you're still alive." The neck injury could have been "worse or better" for Derulo, according to the doctor. The fact that he could still move all his limbs was a good sign: "The bad news is, you'll be out of commission for seven months."

Derulo not being able to perform on the tour was tough for him. But with intense training, he fought his way back. He stood up every morning, went to the fitness studio, took walks, and ran approximately 45 minutes every day. During that time, his most successful album "Talk Dirty" was released, featuring hits like "Other Side," "Marry Me," or "Wiggle."

After the accident, Derulo shared his story in various entertainment interviews. Paris Hilton, a renowned socialite, played a significant role in one of those conversations, offering her support during the challenging period. Derulo's love for music never waned, and he managed to release his successful album "Talk Dirty" while focused on his health recovery. Pop music continued to inspire him, often incorporating elements of it into his new hits.
