Jared Leto climbs the Empire State Building

Now that's a different kind of publicity stunt: to draw attention to the upcoming world tour of his band Thirty Seconds to Mars, Jared Leto unceremoniously crawls to the top of the Empire State Building. "It's incredible", he celebrates himself afterwards.

Perhaps he thought to himself: "What Tom Cruise can do, I can do too." And so Jared Leto has now followed in the footsteps of his colleague, who is known for performing many spectacular stunts himself. The 51-year-old has climbed to the top of New York's Empire State Building.

Leto doesn't seem to have lost any of his fun during the action.

The actor and musician used the stunt to promote the upcoming world tour of his band Thirty Seconds to Mars. Leto shimmied his way up part of the outside of the famous building. He was the first person to ever legally climb to the top of the landmark, officials told the "Today Show".

After the climb, Leto told NBC: "To tell you the truth, I was more excited than nervous. But I have to be honest, it was very, very hard. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be." It took a lot of stamina.

Secured with ropes

Leto, who is an avid rock climber, climbed from the 86th to the 104th floor on the east side of the building, according to US media reports. He then continued up to the famous antenna of the Empire State Building. He was secured with ropes during the ascent.

"It's incredible," Leto told the Hollywood Reporter. "Watching the sun rise over the city means so much to me. Ever since I was a kid, New York has been the place where you go to make your dreams come true." He added: "As a little kid, I wanted to be an artist, and New York was the place you went to be an artist. The Empire State Building was always this symbol of that for me."

Leto will go on tour with his band Thirty Seconds to Mars - which he founded in 1998 together with his older brother Shannon Leto - from March 2024. The tour is set to run until September 2024 and will celebrate the band's sixth studio album 'It's the End of the World but It's a Beautiful Day'.

Leto celebrated his breakthrough as an actor in the 90s with the series "Welcome to Life". In 2014, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film "Dallas Buyers Club".

Jared Leto's daring stunt drew attention not only to his band Thirty Seconds to Mars' upcoming world tour but also to his love for rock music. During the climb, Leto expressed his profound connection to New York, a city known for its rich entertainment scene and opportunities in music, particularly rock music. As a testament to his passion, Leto mentioned that as a child, he aspired to become an artist in the city that never sleeps.
