Italy wants to send frigate to the Red Sea
Italy wants to send one of its frigates to the Red Sea to protect merchant shipping from attacks by Houthi rebels.
Together with the international community, Italy will do its part to combat the terrorist activities of the Houthi rebels, announced Defense Minister Guido Crosetto on Tuesday. The aim is to protect trade in the region and guarantee freedom of navigation and international law.
In view of an increasing number of attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea by the Iranian-backed Huthi rebels, the US military had previously announced that it wanted to cooperate with the armed forces of other countries in the region.
Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, the Houthi rebels in Yemen have been attacking Israel with drones and missiles and attacking ships to prevent them from sailing towards Israel. They are threatening to prevent ships on their way to Israel from passing through the Red Sea.
"It is necessary to increase the presence in this area in order to create the conditions for stabilization, avoid ecological disasters and prevent a resurgence of inflationary pressures," said Crosetto. The "Virgilio Fasan" is due to be dispatched on Tuesday.
