Tesla - Is he coming to Germany? First Cybertrucks apparently with European certification in transit
Since the introduction of the Tesla Cybertrucks, there have been legitimate doubts whether this large vehicle will ever make it as a homologated series car on German (or European) roads. The manufacturer's website does not allow ordering of the monster truck yet, interested parties can only sign up for the newsletter.
The only official appearance of the Cybertruck in the country was during the Cyber Odyssey, a roadshow with over 100 stops across Europe. The truck was displayed at each location without registration on private property.
Despite legal hurdles, especially the lack of pedestrian protection, it seems that several Tesla Cybertrucks have managed to move on these roads – including in Germany. According to "Teslarati", there are already two vehicles with EU license plates. One in Poland, another in the Czech Republic. The images were first shared on Linkedin by a man named Anthony Martin. The original post is no longer accessible, but "Teslarati" continues to show the images.
Can Cybertrucks be registered as trucks?
According to the magazine, Martin reportedly stated that the Cybertrucks have been registered as trucks – and thus a registration was possible. However, it is unclear whether these were costly individual approvals. It is at least likely that they were individual approvals.
There was already a visit to a German Autobahn by a Tesla Cybertruck. However, this was not one of the two mentioned trucks, but an example from "Tesla Club Austria". This vehicle bore a blue Austrian license plate, which is used there for probationary testing of non-registered vehicles. A video of this ride can be found on X, formerly Twitter. President Marco Hornegger of the club did not want to reveal to stern how the car came into their possession or what they plan to do with it.
In June, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was asked about the official export of the vehicles. He assumed that a certification for other countries "will be achieved sometime in the coming year". The current Cybertruck, according to Musk, was built with a focus on North America. In his opinion, international requirements "would have made the product worse". "I think we will have to make a special version that meets Chinese and European requirements", Musk added. He expects a high demand for the vehicle.
Individual approval of the Tesla Cybertruck extremely expensive
In conversation with the stern, US import expert Karl Geiger recently assessed the chances of a German approval for the Cybertruck as low. "The Cybertruck has no chance in Germany. At least not in its current form. That starts with the headlights, and I would bet that the weight won't make it either. You have to measure everything again here, and then you'll quickly be surprised. The front alone will have to be completely rebuilt, otherwise the test won't pass. I have no idea what they thought about that."
And even if it does, it will only be against a lot of money: "For a single approval, where we know what to do and the approval is granted on the first attempt, you have to calculate with 15,000 Euro. For a vehicle like the Cybertruck, where I see so many sharp edges that I get dizzy just looking at it, significantly more. The front will have to be completely redesigned, otherwise it won't pass the test."
The automatic driving features of the Cybertruck, if approved for use in Europe, could revolutionize authorized vehicle usage, as suggested by Elon Musk during a recent interview. If registered as trucks, as reported by Anthony Martin and Teslarati, the Cybertruck could potentially become a common sight on European roads.
