Iran executes man with Israel connection
Iran executes an imprisoned man on charges of spying for Israel. According to the judiciary, he was a "spy for the Zionist regime" and collected confidential information for Israel.
A man convicted of spying for Israel has been executed in Iran, according to the judiciary. According to the justice portal Misan Online, the death sentence against the "spy of the Zionist regime" was carried out in the prison of Sahedan, the capital of the south-eastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchistan.
The man was sentenced for "intelligence cooperation and espionage" for Israel and for collecting and passing on confidential information to the Israeli foreign intelligence service Mossad with the aim of "disturbing public order", Misan continued. However, the portal gave no details of the man's identity or the legal proceedings against him.
Iranian authorities had previously announced the arrests of several men on charges of spying for foreign states, including Israel. In December 2022, four men convicted of cooperating with Israeli intelligence services were hanged in Iran.
Iran does not recognize Israel's right to exist. The two states have been engaged in a shadow war for years: Iran accuses Israel of a series of acts of sabotage and killings directed against its nuclear program. The USA and Israel accuse Iran of involvement in missile and drone attacks on Israeli-linked ships in the Persian Gulf.
According to several human rights groups, Iran is the country with the second largest number of executions in the world after China. According to the Norway-based organization Iran Human Rights, more than 600 people have been executed since the beginning of the year alone - the highest number in eight years.
