Intense storms have a tight hold on the northeastern region.
Severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds, have caused significant issues in various regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hamburg. Several areas are experiencing traffic accidents, roof fires, flooded cellars, and flooded roads. However, Brandenburg seems to be relatively unscathed.
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, heavy thunderstorms with hail and strong gusts of wind lashed parts of the region in the evening, leading to flooded roads in some towns. The police reported four minor traffic accidents on the A20 between Grevesmühlen and Wismar due to aquaplaning. Lightning struck a house in Priborn, Müritz region, causing a roof truss fire which the fire department attended to.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms further disrupted Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, with the fire departments staying busy. Lightning struck a house in Hamberge (Stormarn district), starting a fire according to a southern regional control center spokesperson. Fortunately, the house was unoccupied at the time, and around 100 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames. The districts of Herzogtum Lauenburg, Ostholstein, and Stormarn were hit hard by the heavy rainfall. Helpers dealt with over 60 incidents, most involving water damage to cellars and streets.
Highway 1 was temporarily closed for approximately 150 meters between Ahrensburg and Stapelfeld due to flooding. In Hamburg, road water resulted in numerous call-outs, with numerous incidents occurring in the north-eastern part of the city. In Hipstedt (Segeberg district), a rainwater retention basin was at risk of overflowing in the evening.
Brandenburg Avoids Major Damage
Thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds had been mild in Brandenburg until the evening. Regional control centers reported some flooded streets, flooded cellars, and broken branches. No significant injuries were reported. As one spokeswoman for the Northwest Regional Control Center (Potsdam and the districts of Havelland, Prignitz, and Ostprignitz-Ruppin) stated, "The storm has passed us by."
In Potsdam, heavy rain flooded the Zeppelinstraße/Geschwister-Scholl-Straße intersection, causing a temporary suspension of streetcar services.
The districts of Barnim, Uckermark, and Oberhavel have been spared major damage thus far. The North-East Regional Control Center in Eberswalde reported, "It wasn't as bad as expected." Only 13 incidents had been dealt with by the fire department at 7:00 pm, and 14 were still ongoing. The main focus of the operations was in the Oberhavel district, where cellars had flooded, and branches had fallen onto roads. "It has been relatively harmless," a spokesperson added.
