Increasing water levels on the Moselle and Rhine causing concern in Koblenz and Trier.
The flood scenario in the southwest has started transitioning towards the northern regions. Authorities in charge of managing water levels on the Moselle and Rhine rivers are keeping a close watch on them, as they're predicted to increase by tonight. In certain areas, flooding could become a possibility.
In regions of Saarland, where floods were once a significant concern, the situation is gradually improving. Now, more attention is shifted towards the Moselle and Rhine. The fire department in Koblenz reports that waters in both rivers are progressively spiking, with a potential for the Moselle to break its banks at some point today. This may lead to road closures.
Additionally, the district of Cochem-Zell is sounding the alarm over imminent flooding. The mayor of Zell, as per a report, anticipates the old town could get inundated this afternoon. As of now, some parts of the district have already experienced flooding, and Moselle waters are rapidly escalating. To add to the urgency, various Moselle locks are currently undergoing maintenance work, causing a disruption in the usual flow of water. This has complicated efforts to anticipate water levels. Within Koblenz, for instance.
At the beach festival in Bonn, numerous fairground attractions, including those managed by ride operator Pascal Brand, have been dismantled or relocated due to rising Rhine levels, as notified by him. The increase in water was sufficiently rapid for him to find an alternative spot. The Rhine level in Bonn was measured at 3.66 meters this morning, according to Elwis, an online portal tracking German rivers. Sharp upsurges in water levels in the Rhineland and Lower Rhine are projected to continue up to Sunday night. Meanwhile, a slight decline is anticipated on Monday.
As per information from ntv's meteorologists, the Moselle level in Trier reached 9.50 meters by afternoon. In Cochem, levels could breach up to eight meters today or overnight. Furthermore, upstream regions on the Rhine are also witnessing rising water levels. However, in Cologne, things are a bit more subdued with only a level of seven meters to contend with.
