Carla Bruni-Sarkozy - In the sights of the French judiciary

The former French President Nicolas Sarkozy (69) has been under investigation by judicial authorities for illegal campaign financing for years. On July 9th, an investigation was also opened against his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (56). The allegations are that Sarkozy financed his 2007 campaign with funds from the Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi (1942-2011).

Lawyers intend to appeal the decision

The former French First Lady and prominent singer is accused of witness tampering and involvement in a criminal organization with the aim of organized fraud, according to Parisian justice sources. French media also report that Bruni was placed under judicial supervision. She is not allowed to have contact with suspects in the affair, except for her husband. Her lawyers rejected the accusations on Tuesday evening as unfounded. "Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is determined to assert her rights and appeal this decision," they declared.

The investigation into the so-called Libya Affair against Nicolas Sarkozy has been ongoing since October 2023. It concerns the statements of the French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, who claimed to have handed over suitcases full of cash from Gaddafi's coffers to the politician in 2006 and 2007. Since he later unexpectedly retracted his statement, the justice system launched another investigation three years ago to clarify whether the main witness was bribed to revoke his damaging testimony.

The conservative politician Sarkozy was the French President from 2007 to 2012. He has been married to the singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (56) since 2008 in his third marriage.
