In Buenos Aires, a train collides with a construction trailer.
A minimum of 90 individuals sustain injuries after a collision involving a commuter train in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The passenger train crashed into an empty carriage during the morning, causing it to derail. Officials are unclear as to why the carriage was present on the train track.
The train was en route from Buenos Aires to the northern suburbs when the collision took place on a bridge in the Palermo district at roughly 10:30 am. Mayor Jorge Macri, who was present at the scene, emphasized the pivotal roles played by the rescue workers in swiftly saving the victims.
Multiple casualties were tended to at the accident site and transported to the hospital. Additionally, two individuals endured chest injuries and shattered bones, necessitating helicopter transportation. Alberto Crescenti, the head of Buenos Aires' rescue service, relayed that they had rescued 90 people from the derailed train, in collaboration with search dogs. 30 of the passengers were among those suffering moderate and critical injuries.
Eyewitnesses recounted to the local media that the train had been idle on the bridge for a few minutes before abruptly accelerating and striking the cargo container, violently. As a consequence, rail services on the said route were temporarily terminated.
This incident reignited attention towards safety concerns within Argentinian rail transport. From 2012-2014, several trains accidents, each claiming more than 50 deaths and hundreds of injuries, were reported. As revealed then, antiquated infrastructure and delays disposed the rail system to such occurrences. To counter this, the administration invested in modernized safety and braking systems.
