The Israeli news outlet ynet cited military sources stating that Egyptian soldiers had initiated the gunfight. This information couldn't be independently confirmed initially. The ynet report also mentions that a number of Egyptian soldiers were injured during the gunfight. Nevertheless, an Egyptian government representative disclosed to the news site Al-Arabi that the Israeli troops were the first to open fire.
The region's tense atmosphere has heightened since the Israeli military's intensified operation in Rafah, a town in southern Gaza. The military asserts that it is attempting to obliterate teams of the extremist Hamas. Israeli forces advanced further into Rafah about three weeks ago and received control of the Rafah border crossing on the Palestinian side, as well as a border zone between Egypt and Gaza.
Roughly a month ago, tensions escalated between the two countries when Israel, according to its own version of events, inadvertently opened fire on an Egyptian military post close to the Kerem Shalom crossing.
