Five-time Grammy winner Celine Dion (56) opens up about her near-death experience due to her Stiff-Person Syndrome in a heartfelt interview for NBC News. The singer, suffering from this condition, had been prescribed Valium to manage its associated muscle spasms. Unfortunately, she became tolerant to the drug, risking her life.

Celine Dion's Excessive Intake of Valium

During her June 11th interview special, the singer told journalist Hoda Kotb (59) that she didn't know Valium could potentially kill her. Motivated by her desire to perform despite her symptoms, she took increasingly higher doses of the drug to control her spasms. The typical dose for adults ranges from 2 to 10 milligrams per day.

But Celine's body gradually built up a tolerance, prompting her to increase her dosage. "My body adjusted to 20, 30, and then 40," Dion said, remember ing how she justified taking more of the medication. "The show must go on," she continued, thinking that she could handle the side effects and craving more. Eventually, she began consuming up to 90 milligrams a day, a lethal amount that could stop one's breathing.

Celine managed to break free from her Valium addiction when the pandemic hit in spring 2020, canceling most of her performances. However, her symptoms worsened after quitting the medication.

Last year, Celine revealed her incurable illness to the public. Her brave fight against Stiff-Person Syndrome will be featured in the upcoming Prime Video documentary "I Am: Celine Dion," premiering on June 25th on the streaming platform.
