- In a truck accident, he broke his neck.
Nev Schulman (39) is grateful to be alive. The host of the MTV show "Catfish" revealed on Saturday (August 10) that he broke his neck in a bike accident with a truck last week. "It's true what they say - life can change in a blink of an eye," Schulman wrote on Instagram.
"Lucky to be alive"
There, the host shared a series of alarming photos and videos from the hospital, including an X-ray of his broken neck, a photo of a stitched-up surgery wound, and a video of his shattered bike helmet. Another video shows Schulman slowly standing with assistance and a neck brace, and being embraced by his children.
Schulman recounted that he was on his way to pick up his son from school on his bike when the accident with a truck occurred. He was subsequently unconscious. "I'm lucky to be here, to be alive, to be standing and hugging my family, and to hope for a full recovery," Schulman wrote. "It's hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from doctors how many people with similar injuries will never walk again."
In the post, Schulman also reflects on how quickly life can change. The day before the accident, he had gone on a fishing trip with his family, describing it as "magical" and "a day full of love and wonder." The next day, he learned what "before the accident" really meant.
Nev Schulman rose to fame with "Catfish"
Nev Schulman gained fame in 2010 with the documentary "Catfish," which follows his journey of falling in love with a young woman online and searching for her to determine if she is who she claims to be. MTV adapted the doc into a reality series in 2012, with Schulman as the host searching for "catfishes."
Schulman has been engaged to writer Laura Perlongo since 2016, and they share three children.
Despite the crash involving other vehicles like the truck, Nev expressed gratitude for his survival. After the accident, he reflected on the quick changes life can bring, remembering a joyful fishing trip the day before as a stark contrast to his new reality.
