In 2023, approximately 295,000 apartments were completed.
In 2023, around 295,000 apartments were finished, which is close to the number from the year before. This piece of information was shared with Reuters on Thursday from an anonymous source. The Federal Statistical Office will release these statistics soon.
The Federal Minister of Building, Klara Geywitz, expressed her joy regarding these figures. The SPD politician shared her thoughts, saying, "If these figures released in the media are authentic, it would be a remarkable achievement by the building industry." She sees this as evidence of the industry's steady ability to weather the ongoing crisis, which has helped avoid employment cuts. Last year, 295,300 apartments were built.
Despite this, the GdW, an umbrella organization representing the housing industry, raised concerns about these figures, claiming they painta false picture of the reality. Axel Gedaschko, the association's president, stated, "The completion figures are dated and do not come close to describing the current situation. "We are alarmed by the growing trend of terminating ongoing residential construction projects." He went on to add, "Our companies cannot continue to construct dwellings under the prevailing conditions."
Instead, building permit numbers may offer a clearer perspective on the current situation. "These numbers have been trending in a concerning direction for some time - downward," GdW cautioned. "Every month, the severe shortage of 800,000 apartments becomes even more ingrained in the future."

Despite the significant number of apartments completed in Germany in 2023, thescarce supply of housing units remains a concern. With residential construction projects being terminated due to prevailing conditions, the GdW believes that building permit numbers could provide a more accurate reflection of the current housing market situation.
