"Stralsund" star Sophie Pfennigstorf - "I'm not really a crime thriller fan in my private life"
Around five million viewers watched her debut as Inspector Jule Zabek in the popular ZDF crime series "Stralsund". Sophie Pfennigstorf (34) took over from Katharina Wackernagel (45) in September. In her second outing in "Stralsund - Tote Träume" (December 16, 8:15 pm, ZDF), her role Jule is still investigating as the "new girl", explains Pfennigstorf in an interview with the news agency spot on news.
"Stralsund - Tote Träume" is your second outing as Inspector Jule Zabek. Do you still feel like the new girl in the crime series?
Sophie Pfennigstorf: I was quite happy to flirt with Jule as the "new girl". However, filming for the fifth and sixth films with Jule Zabek is already starting this winter - I would say that I, Sophie, have arrived in the series. It was made very easy for me thanks to the good cooperation. Whether Jule will ever succeed in arriving is another matter, but I can say with certainty that in"Stralsund - Tote Träume" she is still investigating as the "new girl".
When she made her debut in September 2023, 5.15 viewers tuned in. Did you expect such a dream rating?
Pfennigstorf: I was very behind the movie and think it was a successful piece of work and I like to have positive - or at best no - expectations by nature. That makes it more fun. But of course I was very pleased with the interest in Jule, the relaunch and Stralsund.
How much pressure is there to deliver a similarly good performance in the second outing?
Pfennigstorf: As we shot both films back-to-back, it felt like I did it in one go. Nevertheless, I still feel this pressure to do justice to the character, the book, my standards etc. time and time again. I then try to get involved in the character anew in every situation. Besides, every movie is a team effort and this one is finished. Now it's time to let go. As far as the quota is concerned, I don't feel any pressure, others are responsible for that.
How does "Stralsund" differ from the numerous other crime series on television?
Pfennigstorf: I think that the "Stralsund" series benefits from strong characters and courageous stories. I also believe that the fact that everyone involved is really keen on the project is something that carries over.
Are you a crime thriller fan yourself, what is your favorite thing to watch in your private life?
Pfennigstorf: Privately, I'm not really a crime thriller fan, although I'm a bit of a mixed bag. I like it when I still have something to think about after a movie and also when everyone is still alive at the end.
You have also appeared in international series such as "The Team" and "Homeland". Have you ever dreamed of a Hollywood career?
Pfennigstorf: I have to say that I had small roles in both projects. I believe that you have to choose a Hollywood career and at the moment I'm not prepared to make the sacrifices. Nevertheless, I enjoy every shoot outside of Germany and love working with other nationalities. So I'm very excited about shooting internationally, learning new things and having other opportunities. But I don't need the Hollywood hassle.
If your acting career hadn't worked out, what would have been your plan B?
Pfennigstorf: I had flirted with political science or biology. Later, I found it refreshing to no longer have a plan B and to put all my eggs in one basket. But these things also change. Who knows what longing for something else might arise. I'm keeping an open mind.
"Stralsund" is on TV a few days before Christmas. How will you be spending the holidays this year?
Pfennigstorf: I'm flying back from Sri Lanka on December 24th and hope to be sitting at the Christmas table with my family on time that evening.
The Christmas season also marks the start of the final spurt for 2023, what is your personal balance sheet for the year?
Pfennigstorf: I am shaken by the crises and wars in the world. I keep realizing how privileged I am. I am very grateful for all the experiences I have had and that I keep discovering new things. Personally, it was an interesting year and just another one. I've had worse and better ones and I'm looking forward to the next one.
What are your hopes for 2024?
Pfennigstorf: For 2024, I would like to have interesting roles that challenge me. That responsibility for the climate crisis is taken on a political level. Health for my family and friends. ... and yes, there would still be a lot to say at a political level.
