Established in 1980, R.E.M. found international fame in the 90s, making history in the music world. In 2011, the band shocked fans with their sudden disbandment, despite continuing success. Regardless, they left on a high note, knowing it's better to go out on top. Now, the band is reuniting for the first time in over 15 years.
The reason for this reunion was the induction of Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. On Thursday, the four members of the iconic Alternative Rock Band performed their classic hit "Losing My Religion" at the induction ceremony, as reported by "Billboard"-Magazine.
"Creating music and having a catalog we're all proud of and that will last forever is the most important thing we've accomplished," explained former lead singer Stipe on the New York stage. He also emphasized that the band members have remained "not just friends, but dear friends" throughout the decades.
Only a Comet Could Bring Them Back Together
In their illustrious career, R.E.M. is said to have sold over 90 million albums. The last time they played a full concert was in 2008 in Mexico City, before their amicable disbandment in 2011.
On the "CBS Mornings" show this week, bassist Mills answered the question of what brought the quartet back together: "A Comet." Guitarist Buck added in explanation, "R.E.M. would never be as good as we were during our prime years if we came back." Furthermore, the musician stated, "I think we stopped at the right time."
