Monaco Royals' Charm Offensive: Prince Albert II and Wife Charlene Grant Joint Interview to French Magazine "Paris Match"

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene have given a joint interview to the French magazine "Paris Match". For years, rumors have persisted about the negative state of their marriage. Whether they spoke about the beginnings of their relationship for this very reason, only the two of them know.

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene Reveal Details About Their First Date

In the interview, they fondly recall how they met. At the time, in 2001, Charlene Wittstock was a professional swimmer at the "Mare Nostrum" competition in Monaco. The year before, she had won the gold medal there, and in 2001, the royal admirer was added. "I found her to be an excellent swimmer and a friendly, smiling, and approachable person," explains Albert in the interview. "I don't know if I should say this, but that evening, she got into trouble because I didn't bring her home on time," reveals Albert II. And his wife agrees. "It's true that I had some problems that evening, but we won't reveal more," says Charlene.

However, their relationship remained a secret for a long time. It wasn't until five years later, at the 2006 Winter Olympics, that they were photographed together. "We had already gone out in public before, but no one really noticed until those photos," the Prince remembers.

For Charlene, the Games were doubly special. "First, because I had never been to the Winter Olympics before... and had barely seen any snow. And to be able to share that moment with my new boyfriend made it all the more wonderful," she says.

Sport has connected the royal couple for years. So it's no surprise that they appeared together at the Paris Olympics. If Albert were to describe his marriage with a sport, the Prince has an interesting answer: "Perhaps with a relay race," says the 66-year-old to "Paris Match". "A constant struggle and above all, great mutual support," says Albert.
