Hugh Grant no longer makes romantic comedies
He used to have the image of every mother-in-law's favorite. And so in the 90s and noughties, Hugh Grant could hardly be missing from any romantic comedy. But that has been a thing of the past for some time now. The Brit has his own explanation for this.
Films such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1993), "Notting Hill" (1999), "Love Actually... Love" (2003) and the "Bridget Jones" series (2001 and 2004) made Hugh Grant the king of romantic comedies and the heartthrob of the 1990s and 2000s. In recent years, however, the actor has increasingly been seen in more multifaceted roles.
The reason? "I obviously got too old and fat and ugly to do romantic comedies," jokes the 63-year-old on "The Drew Barrymore Show". "So I was offered more interesting things," he adds.
Getting older has not only given him more fulfilling work, says Grant. It has also improved his acting, he is sure. "I've gotten a bit better," explains the Brit in an interview with his former romantic comedy colleague Drew Barrymore. "I got a bit less bad after I had kids, got married and became happier."
Drew Barrymore would like to do it again
More recently, Grant appeared in "Cloud Atlas" in 2012 and "How to Write Love" in 2014. This was followed by character roles in films such as "Codename U.N.C.L.E." (2015) or "Florence Foster Jenkins" (2016) and series such as "A Very English Scandal" (2018) or "The Undoing" (2020). In 2022, Grant starred in "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" and in 2023 in "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves". He can currently be seen alongside Timothée Chalamet in the fantasy musical "Wonka".
Drew Barrymore makes it clear in conversation with her colleague that she still hopes Grant will return to his former favorite genre - perhaps even together: "We have to do another one," jokes the actress and presenter. She and Grant were in front of the camera together in 2007 for "Mitten ins Herz - Ein Song für dich".

Despite his transition to more diverse roles, Hugh Grant's affection for love movies remains undiminished. In a recent conversation, Drew Barrymore jokingly suggested, "We have to do another one," recalling their past collaboration in "Mitten ins Herz - Ein Song für dich." Hollywood continues to offer Grant opportunities in cinema, most recently in "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" and the upcoming "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Regardless of the genre, the charm and charisma that made Grant a beloved figure in romantic comedies endure in Hollywood's entertainment scene.
