How Bastian Schweinsteiger got engaged

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ana Ivanović have now been married for seven years. They have three children together and have an apparently impeccable (ex-)sportsman's marriage. But first he had to ask her to marry him - and quite spectacularly.

In 2016, soccer world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger and tennis ace Ana Ivanović tied the knot in Venice. A year earlier, in the summer of 2015, the two had gotten engaged in London's Notting Hill district. So far, the public was already in the picture. Now, however, the former Bayern Munich star reveals some previously unknown details in the "Bild" podcast "Phrasenmäher".

The first meeting between the two took place shortly before the 2014 World Cup final. He was very nervous, Schweinsteiger reveals. At the time, he had not yet mastered the English language so well, which is why he found himself on the defensive at first. He initially listened and looked to see what was coming. "And then I went for it," jokes the 39-year-old, who says he was convinced by Ivanović from the very first moment.

"You sense special moments and you also recognize them in love when you look deep into someone's eyes - and that's exactly how it was with me," Schweinsteiger unpacks the romantic.

Father asked for permission

He and Ivanović immediately hit it off. They then went for a walk in New York City and got to know each other even better. "Thank God it turned out like that: Now we're a happy family," muses Schweinsteiger.

But before that could happen, he first had to officially ask her to marry him. He first flew to Belgrade, Schweinsteiger reveals. There he asked the father of his current wife for permission for his proposal - even in Serbian.

Schweinsteiger rented a park

The day finally came when he asked Ivanović the question of all questions. According to Schweinsteiger, he was inspired by the Hollywood cult film "Notting Hill" with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. "There are such small parks in London that are only accessible to local residents. And I then secretly rented the park from the 'Notting Hill' film."

Ivanović is extremely curious, Schweinsteiger reveals about his current wife. When she walked past the park with him at the time, the "little gate was ajar". "And I said to her: 'Come on, let's have a look! And then we went in - and then I asked her. It came as a complete surprise to her," he says, describing the decisive moment.

The former footballer, who was born in Kolbermoor, and the Serbian former tennis player now have three sons together. They were born in 2018, 2019 and 2023.
