British royals - "Holyrood Week": King Charles arrives in Scotland

King Charles III has arrived at the traditional "Holyrood Week" in Edinburgh. The British monarch spends several days every year in his official residence in Scotland, the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Upon arrival, the 75-year-old monarch took possession of the keys of the Scottish capital symbolically, but they were immediately returned to him. Charles and Queen Consort Camilla (76) had previously arrived by helicopter and were welcomed with a military ceremony.

Charles is required as Head of State

The usual one-week stay has been shortened this year. On Thursday, a new parliament will be elected in the United Kingdom. Then, in his capacity as Head of State, Charles will be needed to appoint a new Prime Minister.

Edinburgh is celebrating its 900th city anniversary this year. Charles plans to attend a celebration at Edinburgh Castle on the Wednesday. The Order of the Thistle (Thistle Order) ceremony at St Giles’ Cathedral is also expected to be attended by Crown Prince William (42) and other members of the Royal Family.

After the ceremonial key exchange, King Charles III expressed his gratitude for Edinburgh's warm welcome. As Edinburgh celebrates its 900th anniversary, the monarch shared his intentions to join the festivities at the Edinburgh Castle. Despite the truncated visit due to impending UK elections, King Charles III assured his commitment to attend the prestigious Thistle Order ceremony in Edinburgh, with Prince William and other royals in attendance.
