Hollywood actors end their strike for good

"The show can go on" - Now that the striking actors in Hollywood have ended their strike, they have reached a final agreement with the film studios. A clear majority agrees to this. The head of the union, Drescher, is already conjuring up a "golden age".

After months of fighting for better wages and safer working conditions, the actors in Hollywood have approved an agreement with the studios by a large majority, finally ending their strike. According to the actors' union SAG-AFTRA, 78 percent of the members who took part in the vote were in favor of the multi-year contract. 22 percent voted against it.

It is a "golden age" for SAG-AFTRA, explained its President Fran Drescher. "Our union has never been as strong as it is today". SAG-AFTRA represents the interests of around 160,000 actors, stunt people, dancers and other performers in the film industry. Only a few of them are stars earning millions.

Around a month ago, the actors ended their months-long strike after reaching an "agreement in principle" with entertainment companies such as Disney, Universal and Netflix. Among other things, this provides for higher salaries and better protection against the displacement of actors by artificial intelligence. However, the agreement still had to be approved by the union's board and members.

The 118-day strike delayed numerous film and series productions and put many Hollywood actors out of work. It was the first strike by US actors since 1980, and because US screenwriters had already walked off the job before this industrial action, Hollywood experienced a double strike for the first time in more than 60 years. The screenwriters ended their industrial action in October. Economic experts estimate the losses caused by the double strike to be at least six billion dollars.
