Hofreiter aims to facilitate strikes on Russian land.

Ukraine is currently restricted to using Western weapons only on its own soil. There are talks in the United States about permitting attacks on the aggressor's territory as well. This idea is gaining popularity in Germany as well.

Green Party European politician Anton Hofreiter has voiced his support for allowing Ukraine to initiate strikes against Russian targets with Western-supplied weapons, stating in an interview with Funke Mediengruppe: "This is about safeguarding the Ukrainian population. Therefore, we should not hinder Ukraine from using the provided weapons to counter Russian fighter jets in Russian airspace." He further added, "International law allows a state under attack to target military objectives in the aggressor's country."

Ukraine has adhered to all agreements regarding targeted enemies with supplied Western weapons, according to Hofreiter. However, Russia continually alters its military tactics and capitalizes on Ukraine's vulnerabilities. For instance, the Russian military has been shelling the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv from their own land, day and night, including the use of glide bombs capable of reaching targets in just 40 seconds.

The New York Times reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is lobbying for Ukraine to be permitted to launch attacks on Russian territory with US-supplied weapons. He aims to persuade President Joe Biden to lift these restrictions.

No outright exclusion of specific weaponry

In anticipation of French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Germany, Hofreiter called for both countries to escalate their support for Ukraine. Germany has the necessary financial assets and resources to equip Ukraine with advanced weapons and ammunition. "As Ukraine faces a dire situation, no specific weapon systems should be precluded entirely. France, meanwhile, has more expertise and the appropriate resources for deterrence, including nuclear deterrence," Hofreiter suggested.

To bolster European defense, Hofreiter proposed a fund of 500 billion euros, financed through loans from the European Commission. He proposes that this fund is used to cover up to 30% of armaments projects involving no less than three EU member states. Moreover, 80% of invested capital should flow to European companies. Additionally, the fund is intended to enhance relevant defense infrastructure: roads, bridges, and railways.
