Accusations against Gérard Depardieu - His family laments "collective anger"
The family of French film star Gérard Depardieu (74) has spoken out following the allegations against the actor. Depardieu is a "modest, even prudish man" in private, they explained in the newspaper "Le Journal de Dimanche". The family called the accusations an "unprecedented conspiracy". There have been a number of allegations against Depardieu in recent years, including accusations of rape and sexual violence. In addition, a television documentary has just been broadcast in France in which, according to media reports, he can be seen making offensive comments about women during a trip to North Korea in 2018. Depardieu has denied all allegations.
France's Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak (44) said in a TV interview after the documentary was broadcast that the 74-year-old's behavior was "a disgrace" for France. She explained that he could possibly also be stripped of his membership of the Legion of Honor, the country's highest distinction.
"An unprecedented conspiracy"
"Of course we are often shocked by Gérard's comments", but Depardieu is "the target of an unprecedented conspiracy", wrote several members of his family, including his daughter, the actress Julie Depardieu (50), in a letter published in the Sunday newspaper "Le Journal du Dimanche". They complained of a "collective rage" against the actor and explained that "in private, with his children, he is an extremely modest, sensitive and even prudish person".
According to French media reports, the film star's lawyers announced on Saturday that he was putting his membership of the Legion of Honor "at his disposal". Depardieu was awarded the honor in 1996. The French culture minister previously reportedly told France 5 that she had asked the committee responsible for the Legion of Honor to initiate disciplinary proceedings to consider whether Depardieu's membership should be suspended or revoked.
Depardieu has denied all allegations
The actor had already "firmly denied" the allegations against him via his lawyer. In a public letter, which was published as a guest article in the French newspaper "Le Figaro", Depardieu also vehemently asserts his innocence.
