Sinead O'Connor - Here died the Irish singer

On July 26, 2023, Sinéad O'Connor (1966-2023) died at the age of 56. A year later, the cause of her death was revealed. According to the "Irish Independent" report, citing the death certificate, the singer died from the complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

She was also suffering from a "mild respiratory infection"

The certificate explicitly stated that O'Connor's death was due to "the worsening of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, along with a mild respiratory infection." On July 24, 2024, the death of the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer was officially registered by her ex-husband John Reynolds in Lambeth, London.

O'Connor was found unresponsive in a London residence on July 26, 2023. Her death was announced in the evening. Initially, reports of her death appeared in the Irish Times. "With deep sadness, we announce the death of our beloved Sinéad," the family of the deceased stated in a statement. The relatives and friends of the Irish singer, who became famous worldwide in 1990 with the song "Nothing Compares 2 U," were devastated and asked for privacy.

The death of her son weighed heavily on her

In January, a spokesperson for the Southwark Coroner's Court stated that O'Connor had died of natural causes. The investigation into the cause of death was therefore discontinued. The Irish musician left behind three children. The news that her son Shane had taken his own life at the age of 17 in 2022 weighed heavily on her. She canceled performances and underwent trauma and addiction treatment.

Before her death, O'Connor had District Judge Michael Greenwood of the Camberwell Green Coroner's Court declare her mentally incapacitated under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. This decision was made in response to her expressed wish to be declared autonomous. (Sinead O'Connor, Mental Capacity Act, Autonomous)

Remembering her iconic performance on Saturday Night Live in 1990, where she sang "Nothing Compares To You" with her bare feet on the stage, many fans believed that nothing could compare to her unique and powerful voice. (Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares To You", Saturday Night Live)
