The seed - Heino Ferch draws attention to world nutrition with thriller
With a political thriller, actor Heino Ferch wants to bring the topic of global nutrition closer to the audience. The six-part ARD series "Die Saat" (Saturday, 8.15 pm, Das Erste) revolves around the Global Seed Vault on Spitsbergen in Norway, a seed archive where seeds from all over the world are stored as a genetic back-up.
"With my role, I want to bring this closer to the audience. Through Max's eyes, this kaleidoscope of political, power and economic structures unfolds," Ferch (60) told the German Press Agency. It's about lobbying and the question of how deals are made there. "This is the order of the day, but we often don't notice it because it happens behind closed doors."
A TV series can entertain the audience and at the same time draw attention to social problems. "It must not be instructive. It has to be entertaining and exciting. I think you can reach a wider audience through entertainment than with a documentary," says Ferch.
A hot topic
The topic of world food is very topical for sad reasons, "because in the Ukraine war, Russia's blockade of grain exports was used as a strategic weapon of war, which meant that countries in Africa could not be supplied and famine ensued". This series is characterized by the fact that it shows the big picture.
He also revealed what the actor pays attention to when it comes to nutrition and sustainability: "Now I'm lucky enough to live in Upper Bavaria, where almost every village has a church, a cemetery, a bakery and an inn, and where the landlord knows where the trout, venison or pork comes from." Of course, it is also a question of money if you want to eat well - seasonally and regionally, for example. "Many social problems are intertwined in the topic of nutrition; it shows that everything is connected to everything else."
