Severe Weather Condition: A Storm Approaches - Heavy showers and thunderstorms forecasted
People in Germany are bracing themselves for more rain and thunderstorms following heavy downpours on Sunday. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts that showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the country from the south and central regions on Monday.
From lunchtime in Baden-Württemberg, the probability of local thunderstorms with heavy rain is set to rise. There's also a chance of hail showers. Meanwhile, western Germany can expect to remain mainly dry in the morning, before experiencing some showers and occasional thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 19 to 24 degrees, with the northwestern parts of the country, as well as Lausitz and Lower Bavaria, potentially seeing a high of 26 degrees.
The DWD is anticipating a belt of showery, sometimes prolonged and heavy rainfall stretching from the northwest to the southeast on Monday night into Tuesday. There's also a chance of thunderstorms in this area.
The heavy rainfall on Sunday infiltrated parts of northern Germany, resulting in flooding and road closures. In Lübeck, the fire department dealt with 105 weather-related emergency calls in the evening. The primary focus was on evacuating water. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
In the Lasbek-Gut area of Schleswig-Holstein, north-east of Hamburg, a river burst its banks, causing widespread flooding and forcing about 15 to 20 people out of their homes. The water levels reached 75 centimeters, prompting the use of rescue boats from the German Life-Saving Society. Furthermore, various flooding incidents were reported in the southern parts of Hamburg. The fire department documented them on their website, noting that several cellars were inundated.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the storms caused several traffic accidents on highways A19 and A20. However, all accidents resulted in no serious injuries, according to the police's morning reports.
