- Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected at Adele concert
Don't forget your raincoat: The eagerly awaited performance of British pop singer Adele in Munich could turn out to be uncomfortable. "Until late evening, recurrent showers are expected in Munich, and thunderstorms are likely," said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service to the German Press Agency. "The focus is on heavy downpours, but hail and gusts of wind are not ruled out. This could continue into Saturday night."
Just a few kilometers north, the outlook is better, he explained. "The border is right at Munich, but Munich is still within the affected area." So, fans should keep their fingers crossed, as the weather expert left a small backdoor open: "It's also possible that almost nothing comes of it, but unfortunately, the forecasts are not very accurate in this weather situation."
The organizers of the ten concert nights in the arena built especially for Adele, which can seat 73,000 people and is complemented by an Adele-themed park for entertainment before and after the show, have certainly considered bad weather: A special type of asphalt that is permeable to water has been laid over 100,000 square meters to prevent visitors from standing in puddles.
However, there's no protection against another type of weather hazard: "Exposed areas like the masts are naturally dangerous in the event of lightning," the meteorologist warned. In case of emergency, nearby exhibition halls are planned to provide shelter for the crowds.
Despite the specialized asphalt to prevent puddles, the large masts at the Adele concert venue remain vulnerable to lightning storms. For such instances, nearby exhibition halls have been designated as emergency shelters, offering protection of an other circular cross-section design.
