Harvey Weinstein undergoes urgent heart operation in hospital.
"It's been confirmed that Mr. Weinstein underwent a heart-related operation and treatment today," mentioned Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein's spokesperson, and Craig Rothfeld, a prison consultant, in a statement to CNN on Monday.
They further explained, "As we've emphasized before, Mr. Weinstein is dealing with a myriad of major health complications that necessitate continuous care."
A source acquainted with the situation revealed that the surgical operation was successfully carried out. Weinstein's scheduled court appearance for Thursday remains unchanged unless a physician advises otherwise, this source added.
If Weinstein is unable to show up in person, the hearing could be postponed.
The defense team was alerted in mid-August that a New York grand jury was examining evidence related to sexual assault accusations against the disgraced film producer, Weinstein. However, it's unclear if the Manhattan District Attorney's Office has obtained a fresh indictment.
Weinstein, now 72, has faced numerous health issues recently and has often used a wheelchair during court appearances.
Weinstein was found guilty in 2020 of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape. He was given a sentence of 23 years imprisonment, but his conviction was overturned on appeal in April.
At present, Weinstein remains in prison in New York while appealing a separate 2022 conviction in Los Angeles, where he was found guilty on three counts of sexual assault and was sentenced to a term of 16 years in prison.
Despite his ongoing health issues and prison time, Weinstein has managed to find ways to engage in his love for entertainment, often requesting access to movies and TV shows.
During his downtime in prison, Weinstein often immerses himself in various forms of entertainment to pass the time.
