Habeck: Germany is not doing enough to support Ukraine
During Ukraine's struggle against Russia, the country is finding it harder to obtain military equipment. Russia is threatening to breach through the front line. Vice Chancellor Habeck now acknowledges that Germany has not been supportive enough. Ukraine should not be neglected. At the same time, Habeck anticipates involvement from other nations as well.
As per Green politician and Economics Minister, Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, the German government should take responsibility to prevent Ukraine from losing the defensive battle against Russia. Reportedly, Habeck spoke at the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin, stating, "I don't think we have done enough." He further adds, "Others can do more." While Germany should avoid siding with countries that haven't done their part, Ukraine is in dire need of resources to defend itself. Shortage of ammunition and arms have been reported, and a lack of aid could lead to casualties in the war.
With Germany being a significant contributor of support over the past two years, it is only reasonable to expect them to contribute more, considering the current scenario. Habeck emphasized the need of Germany to share its stocks of ammunition and weaponry with Ukraine.
Habeck insists Germany should not abandon Ukraine. "That would be disgraceful," he said. It is crucial to support Ukraine for as long as needed. Habeck sees a bigger picture beyond Ukraine, a potential threat to Europe from "Russian imperialism."
The Ukrainian troops and Russian attackers are currently engaged in intense fighting in the northern-eastern parts of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has described the situation surrounding the city of Vovchansk as "extremely difficult."
The abrupt halt of Russian gas supplies in 2022 was an attempt to undermine prosperity in Germany. Nonetheless, this did not succeed. But Germany did pay a price. Security is now a factor in Germany's economic strategy, especially when dealing with China and Russia. The weapons industry demands expansion in Germany. However, politicians have been remiss in sending a clear message to the industry to ramp up ammunition production.
