Habeck attributes the severe economic crisis to the Union.
"The Union is essentially a shadow organization in the field of energy policy," stated Habeck at an event where his party was leaning more towards the CDU/CSU. The Union is also to blame for making Germany reliant on Russian gas, asserted the German Federal Economics Minister.
Robert Habeck, the Federal Economics Minister, has laid the blame for Germany's recent economic issues at the feet of the CDU/CSU. "Friedrich Merz, it can be traced back to the Union's fault for the worst economic crisis Germany has experienced in recent history," declared the Green politician during a gathering of his party in Potsdam. "Things can be traced back to a past mistake by the grand coalition." German dependency on Russian President Vladimir Putin's gas should have been avoided, believes Habeck.
"Wonder what would have happened if the Greens hadn't been a part of this federal government," Habeck asked the attendees. The Greens recognized the potential danger and were alone in perceiving the looming energy crisis in the summer of 22, which would have destroyed Germany's economic model. "Putin was apparently planning this all along," added Habeck.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 22, Germany distanced itself from its primary gas supplier. Surging gas prices had to be endured, and the economic production collapsed along with its expense. Inflation soared, and the economic cycle was upended. To counteract inflation, interest rates were hiked, resulting in decreased investment.
Habeck also alleged that the Union tried to undermine the advancement of renewable energy and question the eco-friendly transformation of the economy. "The Union serves as a hindrance in energy policy. They shouldn't be given control again," he said.
Moreover, Habeck attacked Merz for showing a lack of seriousness concerning climate change. Habeck applauded the European Union for its environmental and climate protection laws. However, a critical point now remains: "Is Europe going to continue?" Habeck questioned. "Does Europe aim to maintain its position on the global political stage?" The EU must display a stronger stance in foreign policy matters and collaborate more militarily.
