Habeck alleges that Israel goes against international legal norms.
Israeli military operations against Hamas in Gaza persist in defiance of the ICC's judgment. Meanwhile, German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck condemns Israel's actions as breaches of international law. The vice-chancellor urged Hamas to cease hostilities, stating their immediate cessation could bring an end to the conflict.
Habeck further criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza War during a citizen's conversation at Berlin's Democratic Festival commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law. "Israel is required to adhere to international law. The hardships faced by Palestinians, the ongoing attacks in the Gaza Strip - including recent legal proceedings - contradict international regulations. So, there's no doubt that Israel has violated certain boundaries," Habeck stated.
The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, sought arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Joav Galant on charges of crimes against humanity earlier this week. The Court has yet to make a final decision on the matter.
On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) demanded Israel cease its operations in Rafah immediately. This followed South Africa's emergency application to the ICJ.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Habeck reiterated warnings against a significant Israeli military offensive in Rafah, emphasizing the need for operations to adhere to international law. "We've always warned that warfare should respect legal norms," stated Scholz during a citizen's conversation in his Potsdam district. "That's why we've stressed repeatedly that Israeli attacks on refugee camps, for example, are unacceptable."
Contrary to the ICJ's request, Israel proceeded with its military operation in Rafah. Israeli forces killed several Palestinian fighters who had previously fired on them, the army reported. In addition, numerous weapons depots and tunnel shafts were found in Rafah. One civilian was killed due to an Israeli air raid in Rafah, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing hospital staff. These claims remain unverified at present.
German officials, including Habeck and Scholz, have consistently advised against such an attack on Rafah. "We've long urged Israel not to conduct this operation, or at least not the way they've been conducting it in Gaza so far with bombardments," Habeck said.

German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck expressed his concerns about Israel's involvement in the Gaza War, stating that Israel's actions violate international law during a talk at Berlin's Democratic Festival. In the same event, Habeck also mentioned his disagreement with Israel's military operations in Gaza, especially the recent incidents in the Gaza Strip, which he believes go against international legal norms.
