Guy confesses guilt over crashing U-Haul into White House border
Sai Varshith Kandula admitted to damaging US property in an attempt to seize political power. The Justice Department's announcement states that the 20-year-old Indian-born US resident could face up to 10 years in prison.
Born in Chandanagar, Kandula had a green card and was a lawful permanent resident of the United States before carrying out the attack. On the evening of May 22, 2023, he arrived at Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, and rented a U-Haul. Kandula then drove straight to the White House and crashed into barriers at H Street NW and 16th Street NW after 9:30 pm.
After exiting his damaged vehicle, Kandula waved a flag bearing a swastika symbol before being taken into custody by Park Police and the Secret Service. The National Park Service suffered $4,322 in damages, while U-Haul International had $50,000 worth of damage. Luckily, no one was injured during the incident, as confirmed by the Secret Service.
Kandula allegedly planned the attack for weeks with the goal of gaining access to the White House and establishing a dictatorship supported by the ideology of Nazi Germany. He even told investigators that he would have killed President Joe Biden to achieve his goal.
Before this, Kandula had tried to hire 25 armed guards and an armored convoy from a Virginia security company and unsuccessfully attempted to rent other large vehicles, like a commercial tractor-trailer truck or a dump truck.
Hannah Rabinowitz, Mary Kay Mallonee, and Josh Campbell from CNN aided in this report.
