"heute journal" presenter Gundula Gause suffered a fainting spell in front of the cameras on Monday evening. Now the head of the ZDF news magazine, Wulf Schmiese, has provided information about the 58-year-old's current state of health. According to him, Gause is feeling better again. A medical examination revealed that there was "no serious cause for the presenter's sudden drowsiness", according to the channel's website.

Specifically, it also quotes from an email that Gause sent to her colleagues at ZDF at 1.01 a.m. that night. "All-clear. I'm back home. We can rule out anything more serious," she let everyone know. She had previously been checked over in hospital.

The Berlin-born athlete said of the diagnosis: "It was probably an orthostatic collapse." She went on to explain the reason for her attack of weakness to her team as follows: "Nausea, headaches, dizziness - too little to eat, too little to drink ... And I thought I was going to make it."

Gause is still recovering

Over 4.6 million viewers witnessed the incident on Monday evening. At 10.01 p.m. - around fifteen minutes into the show - Gundula Gause suddenly had problems reading and speaking the news. She stopped co-presenting "heute journal". Dunja Hayali spontaneously took over the moderation for her colleague. By the end of the program, she was able to announce that Gause was feeling better again.

"So that she can really recover, Hanna Zimmermann will take over the co-presentation of 'heute journal' this Tuesday," Schmiese announced. "We also wish Gundula a speedy recovery and look forward to her next assignment," he added.
