Greta Gerwig becomes president of the Cannes jury

Greta Gerwig has been a sought-after director not just since her blockbuster "Barbie". Now the 40-year-old has been given another honor. Next year, she is to chair the jury as president at the Cannes Film Festival.

For "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig, 2023 was the most successful year of her career to date - and it looks set to continue in 2024, as Gerwig will be Jury President at the Cannes Film Festival. This is according to a statement on the film festival's official website. This makes the 40-year-old the first American female director in history to chair the Cannes jury.

Greta Gerwig will accompany the 77th edition of the festival, which will take place from May 14 to 25 in the coastal city in the south of France. The Sacramento-born American would embody the renewal of world cinema and represent an era that breaks down barriers and mixes genres, the festival explained its decision.

Cannes was always "the pinnacle"

"For me as a filmmaker, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can be," Gerwig herself is quoted as saying in the statement. "I am overwhelmed, thrilled and humbled to be chairing the jury of the Cannes Film Festival," it continues. The Cannes Film Festival announced the news a few days after the Berlinale appointed actress Lupita Nyong'o as jury president for 2024.

Gerwig celebrated her breakthrough as a director in 2017 with her multiple Oscar-nominated debut film "Lady Bird". Last year, "Barbie" broke all records. It has just been announced that the film about the famous Mattel doll has been nominated 18 times at the Critics Choice Awards, more than any other film in the almost 30-year history of the award. At the Golden Globes, Gerwig and her team can hope for nine trophies.

After "Barbie", however, she already has her next huge project lined up. Gerwig is shooting a reboot of the "Chronicles of Narnia" films. Two films are said to be in the pipeline for Netflix.
