Actor Heinz Hoenig (72) Yearns for Sunlight, Wife Allows Brief Exit from ICU
"Seeing the sun was Heinz's desire, so I asked if it was possible. A nurse and I were granted permission to step outside, and he seemed to relish the experience," Kärsten-Hoenig shared with "Bild" newspaper regarding the short trip outside.
This, however, seems to only be the start, as the core objective is for the still mechanically ventilated patient to return home. "This week, the initial 'discharge attempt' is scheduled: they aim to halt the night-time ventilation. Depending on the progression, further plans will be made. The goal is to eliminate the tracheal tube before returning home first," states Kärsten-Hoenig, the wife of the artist born on September 24, 1951, in Landsberg am Lech.
Among other things, Cärsten-Hoenig explains that the primary aim is to boost the weakened patient's strength for the substantial aorta operation. "My husband needs his familiar surroundings to restore his mental breathing and regain strength," she remarks.
Annika Kärsten-Hoenig: "Boys Miss Dad's Presence"
A significant reason for bringing him home is also related to the couple's two young sons, Juliano (3) and Jianni (1). "They miss their father's presence," she shares, and adds, "I want to facilitate this for my cherished family and prepare accordingly."
Heinz Hoenig and Annika Kärsten-Hoenig have been married since 2019. Their sons were born in 2020 and 2022. "Our sons are our everything. They provide our motivation and are the best reason to keep pushing through and never give up. They are the greatest blessing life has given us," she expresses to the tabloid.
As the primary caregiver, Kärsten-Hoenig also has confidence in her abilities in caring for Hoenig at home. "Since I assist my husband on a daily basis with basic care in the hospital, I have no apprehensions." Currently, she's submitting applications for the essential aids to the social insurance provider.
Kärsten-Hoenig also discusses the treatment costs: "I believe we're looking at around half a million euros by the time of his tentative discharge," she reveals. So far, around 180,000 euros have been raised in the public fundraising campaign.
Hospital Bedgreeting from Heinz Hoenig
Heinz Hoenig was admitted to a Berlin hospital at the beginning of May in a critical condition, awaiting a life-saving operation on the aorta.
Recently, the actor offered a personal message from his hospital bed, which was shared by RTL. The 72-year-old says, "Hello, fans, dear colleagues. I want to thank you all sincerely for the support you have offered me. I'm still in the hospital, where everything is being fixed. I have a wonderful woman taking care of me, and I long to return to my two little boys. Everything will be all right. Thank you."
After the initial 'discharge attempt', the plan is to stop the night-time ventilation in the ICU. This will depend on the patient's progress, and the goal is to remove the tracheal tube before returning home. Despite being in the intensive care unit, Heinz Hoenig's wife shares that they are planning to bring him home soon. (Despite being in the ICU, plans are underway to bring Hoenig home soon)
